Founded in 1992, the Canadian Association Of Media Education Organizations (CAMEO) is an association of Canadian media literacy groups from across Canada. The goal of CAMEO, through its member organizations, is to advocate, promote and develop media literacy in Canada. A media literate person is one who has an informed and critical understanding of the nature, techniques and impact of the mass media as well as the ability to produce media products.
The current president of CAMEO is John J. Pungente, SJ, Executive Director of the Jesuit Communication Project in Toronto.

John J. Pungente, SJ, has worked in media education for over forty years. He has co-authored a number of books and contributed to international journals on media literacy.
Pungente is creator, producer, writer and host of both the award-winning Canadian TV series – Scanning the Movies - which ran for 10 years – and Beyond the Screen, which began airing in May 2008. He co-produced the 1996 award winning media education teaching resources, Scanning Television (1996) and Scanning Television 2 (2003).
He is co-producer and co-writer of Inside Plato’s Cave - an On Line university course for media literacy teachers.
He has given presentations across Canada and Australia, in Europe, Great Britain, the USA and Japan. He serves as consultant to media professionals and is sessional professor of media literacy at the University of Toronto.
Pungente is president of the Canadian Association of Media Education Organizations (CAMEO) and Director of the Jesuit Communication Project in Toronto where he continues to promote media education.
