Hellenic Audiovisual Institute (I.O.M.). The Hellenic Audiovisual Institute is the national applied research organisation in the field of audiovisual communication in Greece, established in 1994. It is thoroughly engaged in carrying out methodical research-projects concerning, mainly, the audiovisual media: Radio, Television, Cinema, Multimedia and New Technologies. Also, the Hellenic Audiovisual Institute (IOM) processes and develops audiovisual media literacy initiatives with the aim to protect directly or indirectly the children and young people from their exposure to the Media.

Areas of activity

Specialty: Head of Media Literacy Department.  The main task is the study of media literacy education, exploring the possible ways of enhancing the level of media education and protection among children and young people. Along with the study, is the conduction of media literacy research to value the existence and the impact of media lteracy in the social context.  Additional tasks are: the collection and information management of children and media research field in Greece and abroad, the scientific support of audiovisual and new media issues in the Greek and global media scene, the editorial contribution to the forthnightly Newsletter and other publications, journals of the Institute, the contribution and coordination of proposals for participation to EU-funded projects and more. Also: High level contacts with media organisations in the EU and globally.

About this member

IRENE ANDRIOPOULOU is a media researcher, head of the media literacy dpt at the Hellenic Audiovisual Institute (IOM), since 2004. She is the coordinator of the first Greek Media Literacy Database (www.medialiteracy-iom.gr), developed and managed by the Hellenic Audiovisual Institute with a view to contemplate for the lack of a complete information centre for issues concerning media literacy education in Greece. In addition, she coordinates the action on the state-funded programme “Audiovisual Education of Young People in Greece”, the Greek Media Smart, as well as that of the Media Literacy Education Clearinghouse of the Alliance of Civilizations – UN.
She has extended experience in media and children conferences reporting on the ambiguous interaction of media literacy and the audiovisual media, commercialism, media education, preschool age and health issues (internet addiction), and also, a number of relevant scientific publications. She graduated from the National University of Athens, Faculty of Communication and Mass Media Studies and holds a Master of Arts in Media Studies Degree from the Sussex University, Brighton, UK. She is also a member of the EU Media Literacy Expert Group.
